Should I Get PG or VG Vape Juice?
When it comes to e-liquid for vaping, two of the most common terms are PG and VG. These refer to propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin. These are the base forms of the e-liquid. The flavor concentrate and any nicotine are added to either PG or VG.
Let’s learn more about each of these types of e-juice.
What are PG and VG vape juices?
Most e-juices are actually made of a combination of these two liquids. The ratio is often stated on the bottle, like 70VG:30PG. These are both odorless liquids that are combined with flavor and nicotine to create e-juice. Both belong to the alcohol chemical class, which, despite the name, doesn’t result in intoxication.
When heated, these liquids will create vapor that can be inhaled. They’re not oils and don’t result in any of the health issues associated with inhaling oil vapors.
Differences between PG and VG e-liquids for vape
PG is used to create what’s referred to as a throat hit, which vapers say is similar to smoking tobacco. It transports flavors better than VG, so it’s used most often as suspension fluid that incorporates flavor concentrates and nicotine.
PG can be found in a range of household and medical products from nicotine inhalers to toothpaste to pet food and beauty products. The FDA considers PG to be generally safe as a food additive. That said, most of the research on PG has been into ingestion rather than inhalation.
VG, on the other hand, is a natural chemical derived from vegetable oil. This provides a thick sensation when vaping. VG has a bit of a sweet taste and has a smoother throat hit compared to PG.
Just like PG, VG is found in many existing products. It’s used as a replacement for sugar, in soap and hand cream, in baked goods and as a thickening agent in certain medicinal creams. Just like PG, VG has been recognized as generally safe by the FDA and is associated with minimal risk when inhaled.
What’s the right PG:VG ratio?
You may be wondering how much of each of these e-juices you should be using. The answer is dependent on what you’re looking for out of the vaping experience. Here are some considerations to make:
- Stealth vaping: If you want to keep your vaping in public less visible, then you want a higher PG ratio. This means that you’ll create less vapor than with a high-VG blend.
- Throat hit: If you want that sharp hit when you take an inhale (as many ex-cigarette smokers do), then you’ll want a higher level of PG than VG. This also provides additional nicotine.
- Smoothness: For a smoother, more substantial vaping experience, then you want a high-VG e-liquid.
