There are few things more enjoyable than a great smoke session with a perfectly packed hookah. The right pack will make sure your hookah smokes as well as possible. But getting that perfect pack can be a bit of a challenge, especially for newer, less experienced smokers who haven’t had years of practice to perfect their technique.

Here’s an overview of some tips and tricks for how to pack a perfect hookah bowl in Rutland, VT.

Understand the differences between bowls

Before we get into packing technique, it’s important to understand the differences between the various types of hookah bowls. The three primary types of bowls are vortex, funnel and Egyptian.

The Egyptian bowl is the most common, and features holes in the bottom of the bowl with shisha placed directly above the holes. Vortex bowls have a center spire with holes around the top of that spire, and funnel bowls feature center spires with one large hole at the top of the spire.

The type of bowl you use will frequently come down to personal preference. The good news is that most bowls will have very similar packing procedures.

The packing process

After you’ve selected your shisha tobacco, the first step to getting a great pack is to make sure it’s been sufficiently finely chopped. This makes it so the heat will be able to pass through the bowl evenly. Try grabbing a pinch of it in your fingers and breaking it gently over a paper plate. You can also use a sharp kitchen knife to chop it up into small pieces. If you see large stems, remove them and set them aside.

Once you’ve broken up enough of the shisha, you can then begin loading, making sure you carefully consider airflow and the amount of space you leave between the top of the shisha and your bowl screen, hookah foil or other heat management device.

Sprinkle the shisha into the bowl. Don’t pack it very tightly—there needs to be a little bit of space for airflow, from the top of the bowl down to the bottom into the hookah. Make sure you sprinkle in enough to fill the bowl close to the top rim. Once it’s filled, use a damp paper towel to gently press down any shisha that is sticking up over the top of the rim. The top of the shisha should not touch the bottom of the foil—leave around an eighth of an inch of space.

Set the hookah foil or bowl screen over the bowl, bend down the tabs to make it secure and then you should be good to go. That’s all it takes!

A lot of beginners tend to think they need to try to cram in as much shisha as possible to get a good smoke, but that actually makes for a worse experience. Airflow is crucial.
